Smiling is Powerful

A lesser-known holiday is upon us – one Dr. Kristina Palmer and her team want you to know about!

Did you know “Power Smile Day” is celebrated in June?

That’s right! Every year there is a day designed to celebrate the positivity of smiles, so that we can enjoy the many benefits behind the frown’s worst enemy!

Various research behind the effects of smiles provides us with scientific claims that smiling – even fake ones – can elevate our moods, reduce stress, lower anxiety, and build confidence. When these outcomes are achieved through smiling, our mental health is improved, as well.

According to SCL Health, “When you smile, your brain releases tiny molecules called neuropeptides to help fight off stress. Then other neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and endorphins come into play too. The endorphins act as a mild pain reliever, whereas the serotonin is an antidepressant.” These molecules assist us in lowering anxiety and improving mental health.

Another study, reported by Psychology Today, states, “When you smile, people treat you differently. You’re viewed as attractive, reliable, relaxed, and sincere. A study published in the journal Neuropsychologia reported that seeing an attractive, smiling face activates your orbitofrontal cortex, the region in your brain that processes sensory rewards.” In other words, when you experience someone smiling, your brain activity reflects the sensation of being rewarded.

The benefits behind smiling are clear. Everyone has the right to experience improved confidence and better mental well-being through smiling. Unfortunately, not everyone feels confident about their smile. If that’s the case for you, please consider reaching out to Oak Bark Dental.

We encourage you to get out and celebrate Smile Power Day (or month)! How can you do so? Try greeting every person you meet with a smile. Or wave to others while driving and show your smile!

Each person’s smile is unique, and no person should be shy to show theirs! If your smile is not quite what you want it to be, consider contacting Dr. Kristina Palmer and her office for a visit.
