What to Do for a Toothache in a Dental Emergency

If you’re like most people, especially adults, you have experienced some tooth pain at some point in your life. Oftentimes, the pain subsides in a relatively short amount of time even though while under duress it may feel like an eternity. But if the pain persists for more than a day or two, it’s time to seek help.

Let’s work on understanding toothaches, what we can do to avoid them, and when it’s time to get help.

With minor tooth pain, MouthHealthy.org recommends rinsing “the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between the teeth. Do not put aspirin on the aching tooth or gum tissues.” Avoiding chewing hard candies and popcorn kernels – dentists’ worst enemies – are often the cause of minor tooth pain. You can typically help to alleviate relatively minor pain without seeing a dentist.

However, there are much more serious causes involved with toothaches. WebMD notes, “Bacteria growing inside your mouth can contribute to gum disease and dental decay, both of which can cause pain.” Such issues can lead to long-lasting pain without being treated.
